The Commons Engine (featured in our 2023 article “Commons Engine - Creating Living Economies for Thrivability”) now has a new offering, which excites us greatly! It’s called Recurv.
Systems of all kinds can be seen as flows. They distribute resources around networks that could be digital, natural or financial. Innovative decentralising technologies, like Holochain, allow us to reconfigure and refine flows in ways that suit us rather than the entrenched ones created with centralised models.
Discovering, learning and weaving flows at the edges can be more challenging than surfing the mainstream. Many innovators find their discoveries in deep persistence, perpetual inquiry, and joy in their craft. Rather than seeing their efforts as drudgery and ‘work’, many frame it as play. Finding these people to test new strategies free of the ‘usual’ rules can be challenging, while divining best practice in the maelstrom of ideas can be arduous. Commons Engine plan to bring diverse players together to, help them to trace and enrich systemic flows with Recurv.
Intended to offer a novel program of open-ended group discovery it will bring together leading practitioners of new economic systems, technologists and entrepreneurs committed to discovering, experimenting and refining sustainable systems. By convening a collaborative environment Recurv sees a future platform that:
“...encompasses the amalgamation of Advanced AI and Natural Language Processing models with human curation and feedback loops that provide sense-making about what is of interest, what do users need, what content can be created, what content already exists. Every piece of content is an artifact, a module to be composed, like scraps in an ant colony, ready to serve as the building block for the next creation.”
Each Recurv member will also have access to a wide range of exclusive events and collective intelligence workshops to prototype and field test their ideas. Ferananda Ibarra, Director at the Commons Engine, envisions,
“people coming to Recurv not only with the aspiration to design and embody new social economic systems but to recover from the capitalist frames of scarcity, trauma and extraction in which we have been raised”.
Developing such a ground-breaking program is no small undertaking. True to their Web3 origins, the team is currently fundraising through the Gitcoin Grant system. Recurv is amongst 16 other projects in the OpenCivics Consortium Round. This category is designed to support projects that are developing “critical collaborative protocols, prototypes, and infrastructures that enable civic engagement and interoperable civic utilities for direct governance and stewardship of our communities and commons.”
In their pitch, the team developing Recurv made up of Fernanda Ibarra, Peter Cobabe, Arthur Brock, Nicole Klau and Greg Cassel, have highlighted their intention to develop their first proof of concept, ‘Value Eyes’.
Value Eyes is the scoping project for contributors to define the collective value direction and grammar of the Recurv program. The first group to offer their perspective are MetaIntegral, the transdisciplinary design firm. Using this syntax of intention to enhance their bonds of collaboration Value Eyes will build out the learning platform and onboard the first participants.
Using quadratic models devised by Vitalik Buterin, Zoe Hitzig & E. Glen Weyl Gitcoin’s innovative mechanism helps to support Web3 projects by matching donations given by the community. Rather than relying on the prevailing method where grant funds are directly matched to donations which can be distorted by communities with deeper pockets, Gitcoin also weights the number of individual donations made.
This means many small donations have a cumulative effect that outweighs individual large donations - “the broader the support, the bigger the match!”. The total OpenCivics Consortium grant pool is $66,000 USDC with a maximum $10,560 grant available to any one project. The funding round runs until midnight on Tuesday 7th May 2024.
For those new to the ecosystem and community, the people participating in the early days of the Metacurrency Project at the Commons Engine were instrumental in envisioning the necessity of building Holochain.
Recurv’s new website complements their Gitcoin submission offering greater depth and detail! To support the build-out of Value Eyes and the Recurv program the team is appealing to the community to offer donations to the current Gitcoin round ending on Tuesday! And as each donation is quadratically matched they are valuable beyond mere monetary - every small donation will help to bring about new ways to play and discover harmonious flow!

Feedback Request - How are Holochain's docs? From Paul d’Aoust, Technical Community Engagement for Holo.host
Tell us what you think, so we can improve them! We'd like to invite you to give your feedback on how well supported you feel by Holochain's learning and reference materials. As the developer ecosystem grows, we want to improve the experience of both new developers and people who have been developing with Holochain for a while.
It doesn't matter whether you're spending 40 hours a week developing a hApp or just tried Holochain up once years ago. We want to hear how well our documentation has or hasn't supported your journey. Frustrations, challenges, critiques, recommendations, we want to know about it all. There are no wrong answers!
As Holo approaches a public launch, we want to make sure Holochain is ready for the next wave of app developers. So we'll be using your feedback to make sure the documentation we're writing actually meets everyone's needs.
The survey should take about fifteen minutes, and you can answer as few or as many questions as you like. Thank you!
