MewsFeed - The hApp "where the calm cats talk"
The microblogging app geared toward calm and coherent conversation
MewsFeed is the new, fun social media application being built on Holochain that is designed to take advantage of the protocols and coordination that become possible with decentralised networks.
The original version, a Twitter-like prototype called “Clutter”, was built in 2017, when Holochain was first envisaged. Why Clutter? Because a herd of cats is called a clutter, cats eat birds and cats rule the internet! Once the work of building the infrastructure of Holochain got underway, Clutter, along with a few other prototype apps were shelved until earlier this year when Holochain Beta was announced. Now, with a stable development environment Clutter, now named MewsFeed, is revived and being built under the stewardship of GeekGene LLC, run by Holochain founder, Arthur Brock. Contributing to the development currently are Matt Gabrenya, Jost Schulte, Harlan Wood, Moritz Bieling, And Art. Past contributions have been made by Wesley Finck, Nicolas Luck, Guillem Cordoba, Stephan Junker and Eric Harris-Braun. Interestingly the team are sharing their phenomenal Github progress in the MewsFeed Discord server.

The vision of MewsFeed is to go in a somewhat different direction than existing social media applications like Twitter. It looks beyond the ability to publish, post and comment on ideas but to empower users. To achieve this, MewsFeed intends to use protocols and rules for interaction on the fly using TrustGraph Trust Atoms. These Atoms allow users to choose who and how they interact with others. Consider them as follows, likes, claps etc but with the ability to granularly define what it is that you’re following or liking. You can appreciate someone’s perspective on a technical subject they are an expert in but don’t feel the need to hear about their hobby. You might want to follow a particular subject but not the wider conversation. Trust Atoms allow you to define exactly what weight you give to each person, perspective or tag as you’re using the app.
Matthew Schutte provides a key insight into MewsFeed (and Holochain as a whole):
"Today, we rely on many communication systems that feel addicting, annoying or even predatory, but there are points of friction that prevent us from experimenting with different patterns of communication. Right now, I don't get to adjust the algorithms on my Twitter, Instagram, or TikTok feeds. We need to be free to adjust how our communication tools work in hopes that they might serve us better. If one attempt doesn't work, we can try something different. A failed experiment often costs only the time and energy of those of us who felt compelled to try. On the other hand, when we succeed and find a new pattern that makes our lives noticeably better, that superior pattern has the potential to go viral and yield benefits to a much broader community, maybe even the whole world.”
It’s this very mechanism of local experimentation and fast adoption of successful experiments that makes evolution — and evolutionary success — possible. In future releases, MewsFeed intends to take advantage of this dynamic by empowering users with protocols around participation rules, content integrity, and information sourcing. Crucially, anyone will be able to create, develop, maintain, fork, and otherwise work with these protocols as soon as they come into publicly visible use, allowing users another mechanism to regulate their interactions with people and content on the platform. This puts the evolutionary dynamic into the hands of MewsFeed users. It gives them power over their own experience, their patterns of engagement with their audience, while encouraging friendly competition and cooperation to discover collectively desired outcomes.
The first official release of MewsFeed will available on the Holochain Launcher soon and will be debuted at dWeb Camp between June 21 to June 25 where participants will be able to use the Holo Hosting Alpha infrastructure. To sign up for early access go to https://mewsfeed.social!
To support the development of MewsFeed the developers are asking for feedback, adoption, and financial support from the community. They have plans to transition to a self-sustaining business model using a Holochain-based name registrar, for example, as a name service provider. As the hApp is intended to be used as a commons, HoloPort owners who wish to support MewsFeed after Holo Beta could offer their resources at a reduced price, or even free, to help sustain MewsFeed’s not for profit-oriented business model.
