Our World
The Immersive Playing Environment
Our World, developed by NextGen Software, is a free-to-play game designed to enhance our connection with our real-world environment. Their augmented reality (AR) mechanics combine the proven benefits of outdoor activity, using geolocating, with player rewards, gamifying their environmental experience.
The game uses NextGen’s OASIS (Open Advanced Sensory Immersion System) API as a back-end to connect with the Internet as well as Web3 and Web2. OASIS is designed to work with multiple technologies including Holochain, Ethereum, the Solana network and the Fediverse, among many others. It allows players to take their in-game rewards, NFTs, ‘Karma’ points and avatar customisations with them across digital environments; from game to game, Holochain to blockchain and back again. Players will also be able to create things like local meetups and geo-cache their own NFTs, that could have been collected elsewhere.
Imagine opening Our World on your smartphone while at your local community park. Using your camera, you can see on the screen various augmented reality NFTs that are overlaid on the litter bins. Each time you place some rubbish in the bin you are rewarded with the NFT, or a Karma point - the in-game reward.
Players can use those rewards outside Our World because OASIS allows them to be transferred throughout Web3. Remember the Pokémon Go craze in 2017 when it was everywhere and downloaded 750 million times? The next generation of immersive playing environments is being built across the decentralised landscape of Our World!
To stimulate player involvement, and with a nod to future financial stability, businesses and brands will be able to create experiences relevant to them within Our World; outdoor companies might create NFT challenges to visit national parks, or healthy food brands could offer collectable digital discounts for participating in community runs. Ensuring players aren’t manipulated, the geolocations available to sponsors will be based on the brands’ social behaviour including; environmental conduct, charitable giving and employee welfare initiatives. And, players will have a choice over how much data they share with those sponsors. The intention is to create positive feedback loops for ethical brands to participate in beneficial localised activity.

It’s well known that young people are spending more of their time indoors, using digital devices, than ever before. Our World’s David Ellams and Max Gershfield want to encourage these gamers to step outside their homes (while still playing with their devices) and get some fresh air, exercise, meet up and be rewarded with Karma points and NFTs. From David’s personal experience with Autism, he has found outdoor activity and movement invaluable in maintaining his own health and well-being. Max, a keen nature lover and founder of a localised complimentary currency at his university back in 2010 says,

NextGen Software have also developed tools for .NET and Unity devs to help build Holochain Apps. Their tools, including the OASIS API, have already been downloaded over 100K times!
To support NextGen’s continued development of Our World and the dev tools, they’re asking the community to help them bring attention to their project by sharing links on social media, writing code and assisting with grant applications. Currently they are competing for the AWE XR Start-Up Prize due to be announced on October 25th!
