We don’t often address ‘developer’ topics in the newsletter as we’ve purposefully chosen to write for the non-technical community. We see the beauty of what Holochain can bring and want to share it with people who aren’t developers. We normally write the newsletter for the people that will use Holochain applications, like you, rather than those who are building them. We refer the Devs and “Creators” to the Holochain Foundation to find a wealth of documentation, self-paced learning, a dev oriented Discord server, and running hackathons where core developers are on-hand to support attendees. Sometimes though, we like to offer non-developers a chance to peek inside some amazing developer tools!
If you’ve been around the ecosystem a while you may have heard of Guillem Cordoba, Viktor Zaunders and Eric Bear. Together they’ve formed darksoil studio to build “simple peer to peer apps for groups of people to meet their non-digital needs and core tooling for the Holochain Ecosystem.” darksoil builds it’s apps with supplementary functionality in mind, knowing that the use patterns their hApps help to weave between peers can be applied to many applications where collaboration and consolidated marketplaces are needed.
Their first tool, the Holochain Playground, was built to help developers and app architects play with Holochain, learn how the nodes interact within their app, fault find and try out new patterns.
plenty is a group food sourcing and buying hApp they have built that allows groups to consolidate their needs and benefit from collective bargaining power. Rather than addressing just the consumer side, plenty is also designed to support local food producers, helping them to engage with buyers and enhance their product planning.
p2p Shipyard is dark soil studio’s newest developer toolset, and is a game-changer. Because Holochain’s core communication philosophy is peer-to-peer, conveying functionality and control to users at the edge, it facilitates emergent collaboration avoiding the gatekeeping in centralising network processes. With a distributed global user base in mind, p2p Shipyard enables Holochain apps (hApps) to be used on the most popular operating systems (Windows, MacOS, Linux and Android) including smartphones. This has been a key adoption goal for the Holochain Foundation which wants to democratise access to their new technology.
Linux, Windows and MacOS hApps have been available for a while via Launcher and Kangaroo. Until the p2p Shipyard, Holochain hasn’t been able to run on mobile devices. From battery drain to managing ‘gossip’ in the background (networking between devices), there have been multiple obstacles to enabling Holochain on mobile. Shipping hApps to all of these systems is now possible thanks to darksoil studio’s p2p Shipyard.
Serving as an interoperability cross-platform publishing suite, it utilises Tauri and Holochain to help developers publish their hApps to Windows, MacOS, Linux and Android! Apple’s mobile iOS integration is coming thanks to Holochain’s collaboration with Wasmer!
In simple terms, hApp developers can package their Holochain app (which is probably built using the scaffolding tool, that Guillem built!) with the p2p Shipyard which makes it ship-shape to to run on all of those operating systems! The Shipyard enables upgrades and bug fixes to the OS interface as new releases are made by Microsoft, Google, Apple etc.
The way Holochain works, there are two levels of an App: Level one includes UI, communication between peers, execution of actors, coordinating the data, pretty much everything that’s not validating what’s valid and what’s not. Level 2 is validating what’s valid and what’s not. If you make changes to level 1, you can update your app seamlessly without any friction, but, if you change the Level 2 validation rules of the app, then you need to migrate the data from the old app to the new one, which is a different process. The p2p Shipyard enables rolling updates at Level 1 across multiple operating systems as needed, simplifying application management for both publishers and users! P2p Shipyard doesn’t do the Level 2 migration yet, but it will by November.
darksoil studio have implemented a remarkable funding model that benefits the entire Holochain community now, when the ecosystem needs it most. The p2p Shipyard is already built and is a deeply important element of the Holochain stack that allows applications to be deployed on all of the major operating systems: PC and mobile! With this tool the darksoil studio team have massively simplified the distribution of hApps throughout the many devices we use globally. Undoubtedly it will help to engage application creators who want to publish Holochain applications!
The p2p Shipyard is currently offered as Source-Available Software, which means anyone can audit the software for security purposes. If you have a hApp you’d like to publish using the Shipyard, reach out to darksoil studio to work out a licence fee. All licence fees will be made as contributions to the Retroactive Crowdfunding goal of $100,000 on Open Collective, and once that goal is reached, darksoil will transition the licensing structure around the Shipyard to make it Free and Open Source forever. Following that, contributions to support the shipyard will be welcome, but not required for anyone who wants to use it.
This innovative model means we, as users, can benefit from the p2p Shipyard’s capabilities now and not have to wait for a protracted crowdfunding process to meet the target before such a powerful, and critical, piece of software is built!
Another advantage of this model, while it’s still in the licence-fee phase, is that early adopters who want to use the Shipyard will get to connect with the darksoil team to discuss their use case and implementation. Support tickets for p2p Shipyard are available from their Open Collective page for help with challenging issues that would benefit from input from the team; such as integration problems, or for funding the development of a requested Shipyard feature.
Some of the first utilisations of the p2p Shipyard are the Relay messaging and Recovery backup apps that Holo are making in partnership with Volla for their soon-to-be released Quintus smartphone!
So far darksoil studio are 35% of the way towards the retroactive crowdfunding goal to open source the Shipyard! You can contribute to making the p2p Shipyard Free and Open-Source forever on the Open Collective, a transparent funding platform which accepts online payments, or with cryptocurrencies HOT or ETH.
If you’re using a hApp on your mobile phone in the next 12 months, it’s thanks to the p2p Shipyard! Let’s launch them with a big send-off from the community!
