Sustafy - Origin Supply Chain Data at Scale
A real-time holistic supply chain project, using hREA and Holochain, to assist maker communities meet the EU Digital Product Passport legislation due in 2024.

Sustafy, a supply chain transparency hApp, has embraced Holochain and hREA as the solutions to power their project. Sustafy aims to collect real-time origin data from the bottom-up and deliver new services such as smart contracts, data rollups, project management, real-time accounting, and more to makers, consumers, researchers, and regulators.
These innovations will enable handmade craft makers to meet the Digital Product Passport (DPP) legislation which goes into effect in the European Union in 2024. Currently 36% of India’s handmade craft exports are bought by EU members. Sustafy’s application is intended to help power UN Sustainable Development Goals in transparent and meaningful ways by delivering "origin supply chain data at scale."
Long-term, Sustafy seeks to energise the planet’s billions of smallholder making and farming families by providing access to Holochain's tools. Through Sustafy those makers and farmers will gain access to simpler micro-lending and credit swaps, new markets, self-organising cooperatives, raw materials banks, project management, payment solutions, while also improving their margins, bargaining power and land security. Sustafy will offer those craft smallholders appreciable creative recognition, greater inclusion, equity and agency within their industries and communities.
Sustafy began in 2019 when founder Scott Frankum visited India to develop products for an e-commerce website. While there he noticed economic oddities in the pricing of products: a metre of indigo khadi had the same price all over the country despite being some of the most differentiated textiles in the world. Recognising these anomalies as signs of misaligned incentives he developed a strategy to restore functioning markets.
While evaluating Blockchain for advisory projects in the USA, Scott found Holochain and saw its potential to power smarter, greener, fairer collaborative economies. Realising transparent supply chains could be transformative for India's handmades, he and co-founder, Nilesh Yadav, started the Jaipur Crafts Festival to engage makers, suppliers and the wider industry. Their intent was to build trust and help to inform and prepare them for this business transformation in 2024.
Sustafy, currently in their seed stage, are already engaging and coaching maker communities to meet the Digital Product Passport framework by utilising current resources, skills, and team members. Crowdfunding campaigns are planned for June this year which will accelerate the addition of more categories and products to their developing Holochain Application (hApp). They will also engage broader audiences, develop capital opportunities and expand the project's revenue model: charging regulated organisations for their compliance data.
The next, and more complex, phase of work will see Sustafy partner with a 12,000-strong coop to collect and pass origin supply chain data of raw wool and woven wool cloth yardage to the hApp. This large scale proof-of-concept will verify the technology is fit-for-use in the rural communities of developing countries, decoding the digital divide faced by small scale makers required to meet the new EU legislation.
Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey, Costa Rica among many others will also need to meet the same legislation. Plans include engaging with maker industries across the globe once the Indian wool project has proven their capabilities.
By collecting real-time origin data, Sustafy can engage buyers, retailers, designers and wholesalers in the creation, distribution, and exchange of the supply chain data. Assigning a trackable, unique, QR code to each product will make every resource, event and agent involved in the value flow visible. Grassroots reporting allows end customers to see the externalities of what’s bought and used every day. Scanning the QR code on a woollen pashmina will show the full supply chain back to the smallholder.
Complete information realigns economic incentives in healthier ways and changes relationships between consumers, makers and growers. Sustafy's transparent, holistic, supply chain application has the potential to transform the fashion, textile, craft and food industries while contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Sustafy is poised to illuminate the craft maker supply chain, helping to maintain deeply valuable craft markets in the face of industrially produced garments and goods.

🌟 Latest Official News from Holochain and Holo
Holochain 0.1 Matures, Dev Pulse 133 - “It has been a very long time since the last Dev Pulse — almost three months, in fact! And you know what? It’s kind of been a good thing! In keeping with our promise, the last four releases of Holochain 0.1 have had no breaking changes for hApp developers and users, so the changelogs haven’t had much to report on. This has meant that devs can keep focusing on the thing that matters most to them — their app — rather than worrying about how we’re changing things on them yet again this week.”

And it’s true. We have staid team members who focus solely on design, usability, and accessibility. From the start, our intention with Neighbourhoods has been to make it easier for people to engage with distributed systems…”
