Neighbourhoods and the Climate Impact Fund for Asia-Pacific Islands (CLIMAP) have announced a partnership to address the environmental challenges looming over Asia-Pacific Island nations. Employing blended financial strategies, their goal is to surmount the obstacles impeding regenerative finance initiatives.
The first steps towards the foundation of CLIMAP were taken at the Edmund Hillary Fellowship (EHF) when Siddharth Sthalekar, Satya Kumar DV and Vishal Chaddha met as a cohort of new Fellows. Inspired by the Mai Creation Story and Kaitiakitanga, a Māori concept of guardianship for the environment, CLIMAP’s mission is to:
“...invest across climate mitigation, adaptation, regenerative agriculture and oceans. Its purpose is to champion communitarian climate projects, backed by purpose-driven blended finance models. “
The Edmund Hillary Fellowship, based in Aotearoa/New Zealand, is a social enterprise for changemakers and visionaries committed to tackling humanity's most pressing issues. Named after the legendary Sir Edmund Hillary who, along with Tenzing Norgay, first climbed to the summit of Everest; it stands as a testament to his spirit of adventure, determination and committed philanthropy. The Fellowship brings together a diverse array of entrepreneurs, innovators, and investors to foster collaboration and,
“...accelerate NZ’s innovation system and grow starting and scaling ventures, leveraging global connections, providing mentorship and investment. Fellows are transforming and democratising technologies, tackling inequalities and working to empower youth, Māori and Pasifika, through advocacy and system redesign.”.
Neighbourhoods embodies decentralised empowerment in Web3. Developed using Holochain, it’s a collaborative ‘workspace’ application which provides groups, organisations, communities - ‘neighbourhoods’, with the tools they need to thrive on their terms. Using modular applets selected from a dashboard (think cloud workspace/OS - chat, document generation, project tracking etc) Neighbourhoods innovative Social Sensemaker is integrated throughout to help groups to express their own culture in meaningful ways which aren’t stipulated by the app developers. Utilising agent-centric principles to catalyse collaboration, Neighbourhoods users can decide the rules for their online space, take ownership and manage access to their on-chain data. This pioneering peer-to-peer application will drive positive change from the ground-up by nurturing trust and cooperation throughout CLIMAP’s decentralised investment community.
A recent COP28 report: A Climate Finance Framework (Nov 2023) stated that if global 2030 targets are to be met, spending of $5.4 trillion per year will be required. Finding, activating and assuring those levels of investment, while avoiding the extractive patterns of before, requires using more dynamic, for-benefit business models. Impact Hive, the blended finance model proposed by another EHF Fellow, Andrew Hewitt of Game Changers, is being implemented. It’s intended to:
‘nurture collaboration among entrepreneurs, experts, non-profits, and investors, crafting authentic synergies where the combined impact exceeds the sum of individual efforts.’
Blending public, private, and philanthropic funds, CLIMAP aims to support initiatives that might otherwise struggle to secure sustainable finance. Balancing the interests of these diverse investor types with the needs of the island populations will help to address externalities. By providing access to untapped financial markets, previously hesitant to engage in complex development projects, CLIMAP can offer instruments like micro-equity investments, guarantees, and grants. Crucially, the fund will be able to maximise the impact of every investment by offering terms according to the needs of the funders and the communities on-the-ground.
Combining verifiable, locally-sourced data, with community sovereignty; Neighbourhoods and the CLIMAP Fund can bridge funding gaps, build trust, mitigate risks and unlock capital.
Drawing on their substantial experience of conventional and digital capital markets, the team are pioneering pathways for ‘non-crypto’ social-impact investors to get involved too.
A sense of common responsibility, nurtured through tangible, transparent engagement that values local knowledge is a dream for regenerative economists hoping to peak(sic) the interest of global finance. CLIMAP and Neighbourhoods are building the basecamp from which the ascent will be possible! Stay tuned, we’ll share updates as they embark on this exciting journey!
The CLIMAP team discuss their project in this video from the Edmund Hillary Fellowship Emerging Models: Regenerative & Blended Finance
Neighbourhoods are extending an invitation to those who wish to join them in their efforts with the CLIMAP Fund.
“As a global capital project exploring regenerative and blended finance initiatives, they value, and seek, opportunities to collaborate for positive change.”

A Note from Anita:
I’m “back in the saddle”, after our long journey by U-Haul Truck across 2500 miles to move from Michigan to Washington State, in the United States. What an adventure! My husband, Dave, and a friend, Jon, were the drivers and I was the navigator on Google Maps. We are now safe and sound in our new home, and even have Internet connection and our Holoport setup again! Life is indeed good!
A big THANKS goes to Sam for taking care of everything for the newsletter since March 8th. I couldn’t ask for a better partner, and he is deeply appreciated!!
Warmly, Anita
